The M16 is the standard general issue assault rifle by the United States Armed Forces, several law enforcement agencies and numerous militaries overseas. The M16A1 was an updated variant of the standard M16 during the 1960s. With various design changes and additions, the M16A1 was issued out to the US Army when they deployed to actions in South Vietnam. While it faced a number of set backs during the early stages of the conflict, improvements were made to make the rifle perform more reliably and effectively.
